Health tests measure biological processes that naturally differ between people and can also fluctuate within the same person. Factors such as age, genetics, hormones, metabolism, sleep, activity, and sample timing can influence measurements. This means that a laboratory result is not always a fixed representation of someone’s usual biological state. Biological variation describes these natural differences and changes, helping explain why two people can receive different results even when they have similar health characteristics. Why Reference Ranges Are Used
